New Project Marks a Major Milestone Toward the Completion of Central Florida’s Beltway
(ORLANDO, FL) -- On June 22, 2016, the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) Board awarded the contract to build CFX’s fifth and final section of the Wekiva Parkway to Superior Construction Company. This $38.65 million project (Section 2A), located between Kelly Park Road and Country Road 436/Mount Plymouth Road, is scheduled to get underway in early August 2016 and be completed by January 2018.
“We are so close to seeing what has been planned for decades become a reality,” said CFX chairman Welton Cadwell. “When it’s done, the Wekiva Parkway is going to connect Lake, Orange and Seminole counties like never before while preserving and protecting some of our region’s most important environmental resources and at the same time giving our community opportunities for economic development.”
Nearly 30 years in the making, the Wekiva Parkway is a cooperative effort between CFX, the Florida Department of Transportation and Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise. The five CFX Wekiva Parkway sections, located in Orange County and a small portion in Lake County, total 10 miles and more than $270 million in construction costs.
CFX plans to open its first Wekiva Parkway section, from SR 429 at US 441 to the Kelly Park Road interchange, in spring 2017. All of CFX’s Wekiva Parkway sections are scheduled to be open to traffic in January 2018.
The Wekiva Parkway will complete the beltway around northwest Central Florida and reduce traffic congestion on US 441, SR 46 and other area roads. The 25-mile parkway is expected to generate more than 36,000 jobs – directly and indirectly – during design and construction. The major transportation improvement also plays heavily into the economic development plans for the surrounding local governments.
The parkway will feature all electronic tolling, allowing motorists to pay their tolls at highway speeds, without having to slow down or stop. Drivers will be able to pay their tolls using E-PASS or via the CFX Pay by Plate program. Click here for more information on these toll payment options.
The Central Florida Expressway Authority’s jurisdiction includes Orange, Seminole, Lake, and Osceola Counties. CFX is responsible for the construction, maintenance and operation of a 109-mile limited-access expressway system.
